What subjects do you teach?  I teach the foundational skills important for reading and spelling: phoneme awareness, letter-sound relationships, phonics, and morphology (roots, prefixes, suffixes). 

 What are your qualifications?  I am registered as a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) through the Academic Language Therapy Association. I was trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach at the Children's Dyslexia Center in Dublin, OH, where I completed a nine-month practicum, two months of which were taught online. I have two bachelor’s degrees.

 How long have you been teaching reading and spelling?  In addition to volunteering as a literacy tutor off and on for many years, I have been using elements of the Barton Reading and Spelling System and the original Orton-Gillingham approach since 2015.

 Do you teach teens and adults?  Yes, certainly. The materials I use are  focused on the language itself, and are suitable for older children, teens, and adults.

 Do you teach English Language Learners?  Yes, provided that they can speak and understand English at a basic conversational level. During the initial consultation, I will conduct a brief screening of the student’s English skills.

 Do you help students with school homework assignments?  No.

 Do you offer guarantees?  No, I don't offer specific guarantees, except that I will provide structured, sequential, explicit instruction, customized to the student’s needs.

Will you teach more than one student at a time?  No. In order to provide individualized instruction, I must teach only one student at a time.

 How long is a tutoring session?  50 minutes. 

How frequent are the sessions?  Three times per week, at a minimum. For the student to experience appreciable progress, not only must the instruction be of sufficient intensity, with frequent review, instruction, and practice, it must also be systematic, sequential, and cumulative.  

 How can I cancel or reschedule a session?  Please call or email me as soon as possible. 

 Do you require that parents be present with children during sessions?  No. However,  if the student is younger, it would be good for a parent or other adult to be available nearby.

 How do you keep parents informed of progress?  Every Saturday, when I send invoices, I also include a brief progress reports. I can also provide more detailed reports upon request. Parents are welcome to text or email me with concerns or questions.
